The Verdict

I have sense tried my homemade fermented yogurt and it is absolutely delicious! It has the perfect consistency and a beautiful flavor. I have been eating it all week long and it's wonderful knowing I am getting a great source of probiotics in my diet!

Yogurt Time

I allowed more than 8 hours for the yogurt to sit bundled up in towels, more like 16 hours.

Observations: The yogurt has a beautiful texture, not too thick nor too thin. It smells like plan yogurt.

Step 4: I will now put yogurt in containers and let chill in the refrigerator for the afternoon. Once it's chilled I will be brave enough to give it a try.

Step 3:
  • Scoop 2 cups of cooked milk into a bowl
  • Whisk a 1/2 cup of plain active/live cultured yogurt in with the 2 cups of warm milk
  • Once stirred together I will pour the contents back into the crockpot and stir once more
  • Wrapped 2 thick blankets all around the crockpot to insulate
  • Now I will leave it to sit for the 8 hours
Observations: I have yet to see any difference. The milk is still watery but I did see bubbles located around the sides of the crockpot.

Observations after step 2: The 3 hours have passed and the cooked milk is still watery. So far the product only smells like milk.

Step 2:
  • Turn off crockpot
  • The cover is to be left on the crockpot and  the milk to sit for 3 hours

Observations after step 1: The 2 1/2 hours have passed and the milk is still watery but looks as if it's beginning to thicken up a little bit. It smells like milk and nothing more.

I have gathered all of my supplies and I am now ready to begin the fermentation process of making yogurt.

The process of making yogurt takes many hours but will be well worth the wait.

Step 1:
  • I turned my crockpot on low and added 8 cups of organic whole milk
  • I will keep the milk covered and allow it to cook on low for 2 1/2 hours

My fermentation project

For this project I am choosing to create my very own yogurt. I have chosen to make yogurt because it's something I enjoy almost on a daily basis, and I think it would be very cool to say "I know how to make my own yogurt!".

What I will need to begin on 2/11:

-8 cups of organic whole milk
- 1/2 cup of organic live/active plain yogurt
-fresh fruit of my choice
-thick bath towel
-slow cooker
